There are literally thousands of charities out there. Each one has a noble mission and a need for your time or money so that they can make life better for someone. If you're thinking that your job driving an Oakville airport limo isn't quite fulfilling enough and that you would like to get involved with charity work, your toughest task will be deciding which charity should receive the benefit of your aid. Here are some things you should consider when evaluating your choices.

Mission

First and foremost, you should choose a charity whose mission you fully support. If you're disheartened by how many people have lost homes to Edmonton foreclosures, you might choose to a homeless shelter or a credit counseling charity, for example. Being passionate about the charity's work will help you go to greater lengths to help them and give you more of a sense of personal fulfillment and accomplishment as you contribute to their cause.

Expenditures

Knowing how the charity spends its money is especially important if you're going to be donating money rather than time. Most charities are very transparent in their budgeting and expenditures because it's what's expected or required of them by their donors. Check out the website or ask them for a list of how much money they spend where. You probably don't want one that spends a lot on expensive Markham real estate for its offices or spends most of its donor money on administration.

Obligations

Talk with the volunteer director at the charity you're considering to see what will be expected of you in terms of time and effort if you were to volunteer. Some charities will be grateful for any time you can spare and will allow you to turn up and help whenever you like. Others will need you to commit to serving food or playing team building drums for a specific number of hours at specific times during the week which may not fit into your work or recreation schedule.

Location

The location of the charity is especially important if you're going to be donating time rather than money. You want to choose one that is convenient to your home or workplace rather than one that will want you to commute several hours a week in order to teach Pilates in Scarborough. The location of the people that benefit from the charity's work (a country, a neighborhood, etc.) may also be of concern to you.
